Introduction

The Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management Department (HRI) was founded in 1969 to serve the demand for managers in the high growth Hospitality Industry. It was the first Associate in Applied Science Degree program of its kind in New Jersey and has gained national recognition through its excellent facilities, faculty, and the success of numerous graduates. The program is designed to develop the entering student for a middle management or management trainee position. Students select a major in Hotel/Motel Management or Restaurant/Foodservice Management.

The Associate Degree in Dietetic Technology, which prepares students for a career as a Dietetic Technician, was added as the demand for this position grew along with the health care industry. This program is a model program as prescribed by the American Dietetic Association.

The Culinary Arts Certificate and Culinary Arts Management programs were created in response to the growth of fine dining in luxury hotels, country clubs, and independent restaurants in the area. We now have a certificate in Pastry Arts to complement the degree

Technical Certificate programs in Hotel Operations and in Restaurant Operations are the most recent additions to the department.  These 18 credit certificates were designed for the student with a busy schedule and limited time or the professional who has a degree in another discipline.

All majors benefit from a combination of theoretical / classroom preparation and hands-on experience. The practical experience is gained through lab components of many HRI courses. In other courses there is a requirement for supervised work experience out in the field. Many courses also include certification exams to provide national recognition for course completion and competencies.

Classes in HRI are "block scheduled" to meet one time per week. A student can attend four classes in two days. Student feedback indicates block scheduling better meets their busy schedules.
