Formatting Zip Codes This one is for the Excel users in our midst. When you enter letters within a cell, Excel treats this as text and left justifies it. If your entry starts with numbers, Excel will right justify the entry. In our last short class, we found that zip codes were right justified and also when we entered the zip code for Edison, 08818, we lost the beginning 0, because Excel was treating our entry as numeric, not text. To correct this, start numeric entries that you want to have treated as text with a single apostrophe. The apostrophe will not show in the cell and will not print but now your zip code will appear as 08818, not 8818 and will be left justified.
