Filenames identify types of files

 Did you know…?

File extensions identify the type of file (s). used as an email attachment.  You will need the associated program loaded on your computer to open the attachment.  At times, a similar program can be used to open the file; however, document formatting may be lost.

 For example,

.doc indicates a Microsoft Word document file.

.dot indicates a Microsoft Word template file.

.xls indicates a Microsoft Excel workbook file.

.ppt indicates a Microsoft PowerPoint file.

.mdb indicates a Microsoft Access database file.

             .jpg indicates a photo file.

             .gif indicates a graphics file.

             .tif indicates a graphics file.

.txt indicates a Notepad or text file.

.exe indicates an executable program file.  such as Microsoft Paint.

NOTE:  If you receive a file with multiple extensions (test.doc.pif for example) the file is most likely a virus and should not be opened.  Simply delete the message with the attached file; then empty the Trash.
