Norton AntiVirus Live Update
Norton AntiVirus software is loaded on every faculty and staff PC on campus. The purpose of this software is to protect your files from being tampered with or destroyed by a computer virus. It is important that you scan all e-mail attachments and disks for viruses. (Check the “Tip and Trick” section of the Intranet for an article the Help Desk published last year detailing viruses and the use of Norton AntiVirus.) Within Norton’s AntiVirus are files known as “virus definitions.” These files are used to detect viruses. The latest definition files are loaded on your PC before it is delivered to you, however they are soon outdated. As new viruses are discovered, new “virus definitions” are written by Symantec, the supplier of Norton Anti-Virus. According to Dave Coursey, Executive Editor of Anchordesk, “The best virus protection software can be worthless if you don't update it. It used to be a little difficult to get updated virus definitions. Today it's easy and inexpensive--the software will get them for you. New viruses are discovered almost daily, and while they may not be a threat right now, in six months they could be.” Norton AntiVirus has the feature “Live Update” which allows you to connect through the Internet to Symantec’s Web Site and download the latest virus definitions. You should make a point of downloading virus definitions every two weeks. To load the latest virus definitions:
The following screen appears. Verify that the “How do you want to connect to a Live Update server?” says Internet. Left click on “Next”.
The Live Update “In Progress” box will appear.
According to Symantec: “There are three
stages in the Live Update process: 1. Live Update downloads a list of available updates, matches
them to the programs you have installed, determines if any updates apply
to those applications, and presents you with a list of updates that are
available for you to apply.
If there are no new “virus definitions” since your last Live Update you will get the following message:
Left click on Finish.
