Zip Drives

In our last tip, we discussed the amount of data that can be held on a regular floppy disk.  Many of the new PCs on campus come equipped with a Zip drive as well as a floppy drive.  I have gotten several questions about Zip disks and drives.

A Zip disk holds 100 MB (megabytes) of data.  This is equivalent to 100,000,000 KB (kilobytes).  The Zip disk holds the same amount of data as 70 floppy disks!  It is very handy when performing data backups or when saving large files.  No longer will you have to insert disk after disk.

The Zip drive functions in a similar manner to a floppy.  Simply insert the Zip disk into the Zip drive and then choose “Zip” or “removable drive” from the list of available drives.  It is often designated “I”.

When you are done saving to the Zip disk and the lighted button has gone out, press this button and the Zip disk will eject. Be sure and label your disk with the date and the files contained on the disk.
