Floating
Toolbars in Word and Excel
Did you know…?
That the Menu Bar,
Standard and Formatting toolbars in Word and Excel are movable in your
document or worksheet window. These toolbars-in-a-window are referred to
as floating toolbars.
Remember that in Word
and Excel 97, the menu bar displays first. The Standard Toolbar
displays beneath the menu bar, with the Formatting Toolbar (Times New
Roma, 12 points etc.) beneath it.
Although, Word and Excel automatically dock these toolbars together at
the top of the screen, you’re able to move them around.
Simply drag them into new positions. Other toolbars that you open are
movable too.
To create a
floating toolbar:
- Point to the grey
dimmed vertical bar on the leftmost edge. Your pointing arrow should
change shape to a 4 headed drag and drop move arrow.
- Press and hold your
left mouse button while dragging the toolbar toward your document or
workbook area.
- Release the left
mouse button. You have now created a floating toolbar in its own
separate smaller window. Note the toolbar name is listed for easy
reference.
To move the
floating toolbar:
- Point to the title
bar with your left primary mouse button.
- Press and hold the
mouse while dragging the toolbar to a new window location.
To resize the
floating toolbar:
- Point to a side.
The mouse changes shape to the resizing shape, a two-headed arrow.
- Press and hold the
mouse while dragging the arrow upwards, downwards, right or left
accordingly.
- Release the mouse
button. The toolbar will resize to a new shape.
To restore a
toolbar to its original anchored window location:
- Point to the
toolbar’s name in the titlebar.
- Press and hold the
left mouse button while dragging the toolbar towards the top section
of the window, near the original location.
- Release the mouse
button. The toolbar will resize and anchor into place automatically.
To view a
toolbar:
- Click the View,
Toolbars menu option. A right-pointing expansion arrow will appear.
(Any toolbar currently displayed in the program window will have a
checkmark to the left of it.)
- Click the toolbar
name. It will automatically display in your document or workbook
window with the corresponding toolbar name.
To close a
floating toolbar:
- Click the X in the
upper right corner of the toolbar. It will automatically hide from
view.
