Word 97

Page Numbering

Here’s another tip for Word 97 users. If you want to number the pages of a document without adding headers and footers to your document, you can.

Here’s how:

  1. Left click on "Insert" from the menu
  2. Left click on "Page Numbers" from the drop down menu
  3.

You will now see the following formatting dialog box:

  4. Using the down arrow at the end of the "Position" box, choose from top of page or bottom of page.
  5. Using the down arrow at the end of the "Alignment" box, choose from left, center, right, inside or outside. * Inside or outside would be used on a document where you are viewing two pages at once (such as a booklet or manual).
  6. Left click on "OK".
The preview box on the right of the "Page Numbers" dialog box allows you to see where the page numbers will appear. The above example shows "outside" alignment.

The default is set so that a number appears on the first page. If you want to remove the number from the first page, left click in the box to remove the check mark. The document will be numbered starting with page two on the second page.
