 <  The Battered Woman  New

Have your skills to work effectively with battered women.  Topics covered include domestic violence as power and control; the victimization process; why women stay; and services and options available for intervention.  Participants will gain an understanding of the survival strategies that battered women use as they attempt to escape the violence.  Course includes participant discussion, group work, lecture and role playing.

4 hours

<  Men Who Batter  New

Course focuses on assessment and intervention with domestic violence perpetrators.  Topics include characteristics of the batterer, myths and facts about why men batter; treatment programs for batterers; and the effect of sex role stereotyping on domestic violence.  Participants will improve their ability to assess violence and intervene in this problem area.  Course includes lecture, hands on exercises and participants discussion.

<  Cultural Diversity and Domestic Violence  New

This course takes the model used for domestic violence intervention and adds a cultural component.  Areas covered include racial, ethnic and religious diversity, age differences, gender issues, sexual orientation, and disability awareness. Course is designed for those with an understanding of basic domestic violence issues who want to intervene in a more effective, culturally sensitive way.  Course includes group activities, role playing, vignettes and presentations.

4 hours

<  Legal Rights of Domestic Violence Victims  New

This course reviews the New Jersey Prevention of Domestic Violence Act.  Topics covered include police response quirements, restraining orders, civil and criminal remedies, and the family court system.  Limitations in the law and legal system will be discussed.  Participants will be able to educate clients on their rights and how to implement the law at the close of the class.

<  Counseling Skills in Domestic Violence  New

This course provides an overview of effective counseling strategies with victims of domestic violence.  Topics include empowerment and feminist counseling philosophy and skills, brief problem solving interventions, crisis counseling and services available to battered women.  Course includes hands-on activities, role playing and feedback, as well as lectures on ethical and practical issues.

<  Older Adult Services 101 New

This course offers an introduction to the needs and issues of older adults, designed for those who have not yet worked with senior citizens.  Topics include the physical, social and emotional needs of older adults; myths and facts about senior citizens; community resources, and grief and loss.  Course will include experiential activities, discussions and role plays, as well as didactic information.  Pending approval by NJ Board of Social Work Examiners.
