Middlesex Colts Cap Fantastic Season with a Win in Hoops Tournament

Mar 15, 2008

Central Lakes College, Ill. 76
Middlesex County College 79

Congratualtions to Kevin Womak for being named to the All-Tournament team!

Middlesex finished its wonderful season with a victory after falling in the first two games of the National Championship Tournament by a total of six points.

The first half of the game started with a tip off between Middlesex’s Marc Tracy and Central Lake’s C.J. Peeters.  Neither team was able to gain possession of the ball, and it was knocked out of bounds.  Middlesex was given the ball on the sideline and from there the game progressed with a slow start.  Middlesex, having the advantage, started the game with control while Central Lakes stared slow.  The colts were able to maintain control throughout most of the first half by getting many second chance shots and rebounds.  Middlesex’s Rodney Freeney hit a two pointer with only seconds left, making the score 50-38, with Middlesex up to end the first half.

The second half started out much like the first with Middlesex controlling the game while Central Lakes made some small errors.  About three minutes into the second half, the raiders started to make some errors and the Colts were able to make two steals, followed by two layups.  Rodney Freeney hit several three pointers to bring Middlesex to a 12-point lead.  Middlesex was able to keep the lead in the game until Kody Braddix hit a three pointer to bring them just within three points, and then nailed another three-pointer just seconds later after making an amazing steal.  Then with only 1:37 left to go in the game both teams made errors that could have cost them the game.  Central Lakes turned the ball over to Middlesex’s Brandon Rodgers who passed it off to Kevin Womack who was then blocked by Central Lakes’ Fritz Renelus.  With just 23 seconds left in the game, Central Lakes’ Coach James Russell called a timeout.  After restarting play, the Raiders make a mistake by missing an easy layup that could have very well cost them the game.  After a rebound, the Colts Rodney Freeney made a key three pointer to put them ahead 79-76 with only 1.1 seconds remaining in the game.  Central Lakes got the ball inbounds, but C.J. Peeters did not make the three-pointer he attempted, finishing the game with a win for Middlesex.

Kody Braddix of Central Lakes finished with a high of 36 points.

Both teams ended their seasons by receiving NJCAA consolation medals and praise from the crowd who applauded their success of the season.
