Teaching Opportunities in the English Department

DEPARTMENT HOURS:
Monday through Friday, 8:00am-12 noon & 1:00pm-5:00pm

The English Department offers general-education courses in composition, literature, and advanced writing, as well as basic-skills courses in reading and writing, for all degree and certificate students. Underlying the teaching of all classes is a commitment to academic literacy and research equal to that demanded by equivalent classes at four-year institutions, specifically Rutgers University and New Jersey's other senior colleges and universities, to which many Middlesex students transfer.

Courses:
The Department's literature and advanced-writing courses can be used by all students to fulfill humanities-elective and diversity degree requirements.  Students may also elect to major in one or both of the Department's associate of arts degree options: English and journalism.

Instruction:
Proud of its commitment to student success, the Department accommodates different learning styles by offering classes in five instructional approaches: traditional classroom approach, individualized instruction, computer-assisted instruction, independent study, and online study.

Extra Help:
Ample tutoring outside of class is available.  Faculty keep at least three drop-in office hours per week and two office hours by appointment per week . In addition, students can get extra help in the Reading Center and Writing Center  (EH 102 and 104). Tutoring via interactive software is also available in the Department's computer labs (EH 103 and IRC 112).

Student Publications:
Our student publications include Myriad, the College literary magazine; Quo Vadis, the College newspaper; and Becoming Writers, a collection of exemplary student essays. All students, regardless of major, are encouraged to write for these publications whether or not they are enrolled in journalism or creative writing courses. To access information about or to read an issue of a student publication, click on the links on the left.
