Five Approaches

Classroom Lecture and Discussion
The traditional lecture/discussion method is used in classes that students attend twice per week (some evening and Saturday classes are offered in one-meeting blocks) to learn reading, writing, and research techniques that will give them the skills necessary to complete challenging academic assignments in college and beyond.

Computer-Assisted
One of the class's two weekly meetings is held in the computer lab. Students use MS Word and/or other software to complete assignments both in and out of class. ENG 010, ENG 121, ENG 122, ENG 205, and RDG 011 are available in this approach. A computer lab fee is assessed.

Individualized
This is a tutorial approach to ENG 121 and 122. Students meet once per week with their instructors on a one-to one basis to discuss reading, writing, and research assignments. This approach requires a great deal of self-discipline and is not recommended for students who are not highly motivated.

Independent Study
Students have 18 weeks to complete an eight-unit syllabus consisting of various library and essay assignments and a library research paper. Students study and complete assignments on their own, mailing each completed unit separately for evaluation and grading.  An in-person final examination is required.  ENG 121, ENG 122, ENG 233,  and  ENG 234 are available in this approach. Independent study requires a great deal of self-discipline and is not recommended for students who are not highly motivated.

Online
Students submit assignments, conference with classmates, and communicate with their instructor over the Internet. However, an in-person final examination is required.  ENG 121, ENG 122, and ENG 226 are now offered online. This approach requires a great deal of self-discipline and is not recommended for students who are not highly motivated.
