The Department of Psychology and Education offers a number of degree and certification programs, including some of the most popular majors in the college. These programs are vital, rich, and full of opportunities. A start in Psychology and Education can establish a foundation for careers in a range of fields such as medicine, law, education, business, and both clinical and experimental psychology.
One of the hallmarks of our programs is close collaboration between students and faculty. Qualified students may serve as section leaders in courses and have the opportunity to conduct independent research under the supervision of one of our faculty members.
PSYCHOLOGY. Psychology is the science of our minds and our actions – how we perceive and remember the world around us, how we develop, and how we interact with others. It looks at “normal” people whose thinking and behavior promote their well-being, and “abnormal” people who are breaking down because of social or biological influences.
The program in psychology at Middlesex is both rigorous and flexible, offering a solid background for a number of later career and educational choices. For students not concentrating in psychology, the Department offers a diverse curriculum, from introductory psychology to a range of survey courses in the major sub-disciplines of psychology, including personality, social psychology, human development, and abnormal behavior. For students who wish to concentrate in Psychology, the Department offers an AA program in Liberal Arts that attracts about seven hundred students majoring in psychology each year.
EDUCATION. Education and psychology are closely and beautifully related - how can someone teach without understanding the learner, motivation, emotion, intelligence, and human development? The field of education concerns the art and science of teaching, that is, putting people in just the right situations for them to learn a core body of knowledge, or a crucial set of skills, always monitoring and assessing them, and adjusting the conditions to assure the best chance to succeed.
Our education programs are strong and respected by schools and universities throughout the tri-state area. Our students go on to become teachers, researchers, and educational leaders. The Department offers an AA program in Liberal Arts, an AAS program for educational practitioners, and a teacher Aide certificate. The education programs attract over five hundred students majoring in education each year.
