| The ARRT and NJ Board of Examiners require that an individual meet an ethical standard of "good moral character". Any violations of the "Standards of Ethics" MUST be reviewed by both agencies prior to the Board Examination. The ARRT published a statement concerning "Criminal Convictions". The text is quoted below:
"When determining eligibility for examination, the ARRT requuires the applicant to be of good moral character. The ARRT establishes a guideline for this criterion in the Standards of Ethics. Any violation of the Standards, either past or present, must be reviewed in order to determine if the inappropriate activity is indicative of the character of the applicant and may be a predictor of future behavior.
A conviction of a felony or a misdemeanor is considered to be a violation of Rule 3 of the Standards of Ethics. Any criminal proceeding where a plea of guilty or nolo contendere (no contest) is entered, or a finding of guilty is made or returned but the adjudication of guilt is withheld or not entered, is considered to be a conviction for ARRT purposes.
An activity that may be a felony in one jurisdiction, may be a misdemeanor in a nother jurisdiction, and a traffic infraction in another. In order to provide all registrants a fair and equal review of a possible violation, all convictions are required to be reported.
Students should be informed of the ethics requirement at or before their enrollment in the educational program. since the violation must be cleared before the applicant can be assigned to an examinaiton, the ARRT encourages early review so that there is no delay at the time of graduation. In some situations, students have completed a program, only to be found permanently ineligible for examinaiton because of the seriousness of the conviction(s). Students may not be eligible for examination if they are under certain conditions of the courts. These conditions include but are not limited to; suspended sentence, stay of sentence, conditional discharge, non reporting probation and reporting probation or parole. Students or potential students may contact the ARRT to request a pre - application review form at any time. The Standards of Ethics provides details of the procedures used in the review process and can be found in the back of the Examinee Handbook."
The pre - application must be requested directly from the ARRT. This request should be made to the following address:
