Grading

Course grades will be assigned based as follows.  Note that homework assignments are on the syllabus sheet.  Most of these will not be collected, but it is essential that you do the homework problems if you plan on doing well in the course.

Hour Exams (44%)

There will be five exams given throughout the semester.  These will cover material that was presented in class or covered in assigned readings.  Exams will focus mainly on the material covered since the last exam (or the beginning of the semester), but they can contain material covered earlier.  Your exam average will be computed using the four highest exam scores.  If you miss an exam, the missed exam will count as the lowest exam score.  There are no makeup exams  You may be given an assigned seat for exams.

Quizzes or Homework (6%)

Quizzes may be given periodically during class time.  There is no makeup for missed quizzes.  Homework assignments are shown on the course syllabus.  Each student is responsible for the completing the homework, and being prepared to turn it in at the beginning of the next class.

Laboratory Work (25%)

This includes lab reports, quizzes and two lab exams.  The two lab exams count for half of your lab grade. The reports and quizzes count for the other half.  It may not be possible to make up missed labs due to time constraints.  If this portion of the course is not completed in a satisfactory fashion, you will not pass the course!

Final Exam (25%)

The final exam will consist of a department wide standardized test.  It is advisable to start reviewing early.

Grades are NOT curved.

Classroom Protocol

Regular attendance is essential for success in this course.  Attendance will be monitored both in class and in lab.  It may not be possible to make up missed labs, due to time and space constraints, so it is essential to come to lab at the regularly scheduled time.  It is also essential that you show up to class and lab on time!  During quizzes or exams, you may not leave the room.  You cannot use your cell phone for a calculator during quizzes or exams.  Backpacks and personal belongings must be placed at the front of the room during exams.  No TI 80 series calculators may used during exams.

Academic Honesty

In accordance with departmental policy, any student caught cheating on a test will receive a zero for that work.  A second offense will result in failure of the course.
