NOTES ON THE ESSAY ASSIGNMENT
The following books are on reserve in the Middlesex County College Library:

- Joseph Albert Ernst, et al., eds. THE RANDOM HOUSE READERS IN AMERICAN HISTORY VOL.I, 1607-1865 (1970)
- Sidney Fine and Gerald S. Brown, eds. THE AMERICAN PAST--CONFLICTING INTERPRETATION OF THE GREAT ISSUES VOL.I 4th ed. (1976)
- Gerald N. Grob and George Athen Billias, eds. INTERPRETATIONS OF AMERICAN HISTORY VOL. I TO 1877 5th ed. (1987)
From one of these historical anthologies, choose one historical article relating to one of the following periods/issues:
- The nature of the American Revolution
- Reasons for the drafting of the Constitution/the Constitution's features
- The characteristics of Jacksonian Democracy
- The nature of American slavery
- The causes of the Civil War
Your essay (5 pages) will examine the thesis of the article of your choice and also compare/contrast the interpretation of the article with the historical interpretation taken by the relevant portion of the textbook.
PLEASE NOTE--The article must be selected from the editions of the books mentioned above and placed on reserve in the library. If you find these books in your local library, you must be sure you have selected the correct edition and the publication date.
Each student will submit the author and title of the historical article of his/her choice and the title of the book containing it on a date to be determined.
