Short of extensive world travel, what better way is there to learn about the practices and beliefs of people from across the globe than to read of their experiences in great stories? This course surveys literature from many parts of the world. It gives students an introduction to some of the history, culture, and values of countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, & Latin America. And in so doing, it demonstrates the common humanity of all people.

We read & discuss several world classics:

  • Chinhua Achebe's Things Fall Apart
  • Tolstoy's "The Death of Ivan Ilyich"
  • Kafka's "The Metamorphosis"
  • Garcia Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold
and highly praised modern works of fiction by women:
  • Buchi Emecheta's The Joys of Motherhood
  • Arundhati Roy's, The God of Small Things
Some of this literature is available online: works by Tolstoy, Kafka & others. Links to fine websites provide biographical background, social and historical contexts, and even critical perspectives on many of the authors we study. Detailed online study guides are available on:
  • Things Fall Apart
  • The Joys of Motherhood
  • The God of Small Things
Best of all, our private class Message Board enables students to discuss these readings with each other.
