About Professor Roth’s Online World Literature II Course:
Short of extensive world travel, what better way is there to learn about the practices and beliefs of people from across the globe than to read of their experiences in great stories, poems, and novels? This course--an online version of the regular World Lit II course--surveys literature from many parts of the world. Students learn of the history, culture, and values of countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America & the Carribean, thereby discovering the common humanity of all people. We read (and discuss online) such world classics as Tolstoy's "The Death of Ivan Ilyich," Kafka's "The Metamorphosis," Achebe's Things Fall Apart, and Garcia Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold and a story by Rabindranath Tagore. We also read such highly praised modern works of fiction by women as Buchi Emecheta's The Joys of Motherhood and Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things as well as stories by Clarice Lispector (Brazil) and Rosario Ferre (Puerto Rico). Some of the literature is available online, and links to websites and detailed online study guides provide biographical background, social and historical contexts, and even critical perspectives on many of the authors we study. Best of all, the Message Board enables students to discuss these diverse readings with each other online, making thiscourse a truly global education experience.
