What is Project Connections?

As explained by the staff at Project Connections, “The Project Connections (PC) program at Middlesex County College is a specialized support service to help students with documented learning disabilities (LD) maximize their learning potential.  Professional counselors, learning disability specialists and tutors work individually and in groups to provide comprehensive academic and counseling support for this population.  Not all students with learning disabilities who have self-identified are enrolled in Project Connections.  Therefore, some students with LD receive services through the Counselor for Students with Disabilities, Elain Weir-Daidone.”

Where is the Project Connections Department and how can I contact the staff?

Project Connections is located in the Johnson Learning Center (JL) , Room #230. The telephone extension is #2507.

How do instructors know which students are in the PC program?

Project Connection students request that accommodation forms be sent to all their instructors at the beginning of each semester. A sample accommodation form is in the Appendix.  Some students may ask the instructor to meet (after class or during an office hour) do discuss individual accommodations and needs.

What types of accommodations might PC students need?

1.       Project Connection students often are eligible for use of the Adapted Testing Service. Students may take class assessments (usually tests) at the Project Connections office in JL. ( Johnson Learning Center ) and are often eligible for extended testing time.

2.       Students may be allowed to use calculators in mathematics classes
that ordinarily do not permit calculator use.

What are the procedures for use of the adapted testing service?

As indicated in the booklet distributed by Project Connections, the following steps should be taken for students using the adapted testing service:

1.       The student must notify the instructor, through an Accommodations
Request form from Project Connections( Ext 2507) or the Counselor
for Students with Disabilities (Ext 2546) that he or she may need
“alternative” methods of testing during the semester.  Instructors
should feel free to call if there are any questions about stated needs
           or requested accommodations for testing.

2.       The student is responsible for scheduling the date and time for
adapted testing as far as in advance as possible.  The test should be
scheduled at approximately the same time as the rest of the class is
testing, allowing for extended time, if   appropriate.

3.       The instructor is requested to arrange for delivery of the tests to the
testing site, JL, Room 230 in advance.  Each test must have an
instruction sheet attached (sample form is in the form section of the
appendix of the manual) and should be placed in a large envelope.  In
addition, the instructor is asked to specify any special directions
regarding administration or note any allowable materials on the
Adapted Service Instruction Sheet.  Tests should be hand delivered.
Tests should not be delivered by students or inter-office mail.

  4.     Adapted Testing personnel will log in each test.  Tests will be
returned directly, by hand, to the instructor or authorized
representative, unless the instructor specifically states that he or she
           will pick up the test

   5.    Adapted Testing proctoring is available Monday through Friday from
           9:00 AM to 2:30 PM.

Is the Adapted Testing Service available for use during final exams?

The Adapted Testing Service is available during the final exam period.  The procedure for final exams is the same as for testing as indicated above.

Finals that are standardized for the developmental mathematics courses (Mat-010, 013 and 014 and all versions of those courses) will be brought to Project Connections by Mathematics Department staff.  Final exams will be delivered to mailboxes unless the instructor indicates that he or she would like to pick them up.

It is probably a good idea to pick up the PC final exams yourself so that you can have all of your students’ exams in time to calculate and submit your final grades.

What should my course outline say about students with disabilities?

It is a good idea to place a note on the course outline encouraging anyone with a special need to see you privately.  A paragraph stating the following should be included in your course outline:

“Students with disabilities, whether physical, learning or psychological, who believe that they may need accommodations in this class, are encouraged to contact Disability Services as soon as possible to ensure that accommodations are implemented.  Please meet with Disability Services staff in Edison Hall, Room 100 (732) 906-2546.

What if a student is not a Project Connections student and I suspect that he could benefit from the PC services?

Instructors can speak privately with a student and direct them to the Counselor for Students with Disabilities, Elaine Weir-Daidone  for assistance.

Her office is in ED 100 and her phone extension is #2546.
