The Accuplacer Test (College Placement Test or CPT)

 

 

In order to evaluate the reading, writing and mathematics skills of incoming students so that they are properly placed in classes, Middlesex County College requires that students take the Accuplacer/College Placement Test.   The Accuplacer Test includes a reading, writing and mathematics portion. The reading and mathematics portions of the test are taken on a computer.

 

 

Who is exempt from the Placement Test?



1.     Students who have scored 500 or higher in the Verbal portion of the
SAT within the last three years are exempt from the Reading portion of the Accuplacer Test.

2.      Students who scored 500 or higher in the Mathematics portion of the
 SAT within the last three years are exempt from the Mathematics
 portion of the Accuplacer Test.

3.       Students who have graduated from colleges or universities from the
 following countries:  US, Australia, British Virgin Islands, Cayman
 Islands, English
speaking Canada, Great Britain, Jamaica, Kenya,
 New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa and Trinidad.

 

 

The ESL Placement Test

 

The ESL Placement Exam is a written test that takes approximately two hours to complete. The oral interview takes 15-20 minutes. The written test measures listening skills, grammar and writing abilities. The oral interview tests conversational skills.

Middlesex County College requires students who have not had four years of English in a U.S. high school or students whose first language is not English to take the ESL Placement Exam.  

 

Who is exempt from the ESL Placement Test?

 

Graduates of U.S. high schools and high school and college graduates from the following countries are exempt from the ESL test:  United States, Australia, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, English speaking Canada, Ghana (must take ESL essay), Great Britain , Jamaica , Kenya , New Zealand , Nigeria , Sierra Leone (must take ESL essay), South Africa and Trinidad (must take ESL essay).

 

NOTE: The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) may
             not be used for placement.
