The Mathematics Department offers courses that are developmental and credit bearing.  Students are tested when begin academic work at Middlesex County College to determine which developmental courses they need, if any.  There are three developmental courses.  They are as follows:

Mat-010 – Basic Mathematics (3 contact hours)
Mat-013 – Algebra I (Elementary Algebra) (4 contact hours)
Mat-014 – Algebra II (Intermediate Algebra
) (
4 contact hours)

All students are required to be proficient in Basic Mathematics and Algebra 1 regardless of the curriculum they are taking.  Many of the curricula require that students take mathematics courses that require proficiency in Algebra 2 as well. Depending on students’ placement scores and previous coursework, students may be taking as few as no developmental courses or as many as three developmental courses.

Once students have successfully completely the necessary developmental mathematics courses, they are ready to take credit courses.  Listed below are the credit courses and a brief description of the students for whom they may be appropriate.

Mat-101- Freshman Mathematics I (3 credits)
Mat-102 -Freshman Mathematics II  (3 credits)

The above sequence of courses requires that students complete Mat-013 or its equivalent as a prerequisite.  These courses can serve as the required six credits for many associate degrees at the College.  Students who will be transferring might consider taking a different sequence because many 4-year colleges do not give credit for these courses.

Mat-104 – Mathematics in the Elementary School (3 credits)

This course is required for students who are pursuing a degree as an education practitioner and/or who aspire to become pre-school or elementary school teachers or a teacher aide. Students who take this course often need a second credit course to satisfy their mathematics requirements.

Mat-107-Mathematics I (3 credits)
Mat-108-Mathematics II (3 credits)

The above sequence of courses requires Mat-013 or its equivalent as a prerequisite. Students who are taking a technology curriculum will often be required to take these courses. Some students who are taking a liberal arts curriculum, but feel that they might pursue a technology program could opt for this sequence to fulfill their mathematics requirement.

Mat-123-College Algebra and Data Analysis (3 credits)
Mat-124 – Statistics (3 credits)

The above sequence of courses requires that students have taken Mat-014 or its equivalent as a prerequisite.  This sequence of courses would be appropriate and often required for students pursuing a degree in one of the social sciences (i.e., psychology or sociology) or business.  Students who need a six-credit mathematics sequence that is transferable to many 4-year colleges might opt for this sequence

Mat-125 – Math for Decision Science I (3 credits)
Mat-126 – Math for Decision Science II (3 credits)

The above sequence of courses requires that students have taken Mat-014 or its equivalent as a prerequisite.  Students who are planning on going into a field related to computer science might take this sequence.  Students who need a six-credit mathematics sequence that is transferable to many 4-year colleges might opt for this sequence.

Mat-129 – Precalculus (4 credits)
Mat-131 – Analytic Geometry and Calculus I (4 credits)

The above courses are often taken as a sequence and require Mat-014 or its equivalent as a prerequisite.  Students pursuing careers in mathematics, science or social science might opt for the above sequence.  This sequence is accepted for transfer credit at a majority of four-year colleges.

Mat-132 – Analytic Geometry and Calculus II (4 credits)
Mat-233 -  Analytic Geometry and Calculus III (4 credits)

The above courses may be taken after successful completion of Analytic Geometry and Calculus I.  One or both of the above courses are recommended for students who will be majoring in engineering, mathematics, computer science and the science related areas of chemistry and physics.

Mat-206 – Introduction to Discrete Mathematics (4 credits)
Mat-210-Linear Algebra (4 credits)
Mat-234-Differential Equations (4 credits
)

The above courses may be taken after successful completion of Mat-132.  These are higher level courses that are usually taken by students who will be pursuing degrees and/or careers that involve mathematics or science.

Mat-257 – Selected Topics in Mathematics (3 credits)

This course requires a prerequisite of Mat-132 or department approval. It is offered during selected semesters and is recommended for students who are interested in learning more about theoretical mathematics.

Mat-285-Statistics for Business (4 credits)

This course requires Mat-131 as a prerequisite.  This course would be appropriate for students who are pursuing a degree in Business Administration Transfer or the Business Option of a Liberal Arts degree.
