What technology is used by Mathematics Department faculty members to manage their classes?

There is a wide range in the way in which the faculty members in the Mathematics Department manage their courses. Many faculty members use a traditional grade book for tracking student assessment and hand out hard copies of all materials to students during class.

Some instructors have created their own web page for students to use during the semester.  Course outlines, syllabi, assignments, announcements may be posted on the web page and useful links to help sites might be made available to the students. Often these more technologically savvy instructors might also use an online grade book as well as a traditional grade book.

A few of the faculty members use WebCT or Campus Cruiser to manage their courses. They post their outlines, syllabi, assignments and announcements and make use of email abilities to contact their students. Bulletin boards and discussion boards are available on these management systems as well. If you are interested in using either of these management systems, you have several options to learn about them.

 1.    Brian Richards (Ext 2618) is the Director of Instructional Design.

His office is located in
JLC 136.   He is willing to teach you how to
         use these systems.

2      There are instructions at:
          http://www.middlesexcc.edu/academics/control.cfm/ID/107

Instructors who teach distance-learning courses make use of either one of the above systems or a management system provided by the publisher of the text they use with the course. (see Internet Courses)

What calculators are used in the classroom?

Calculator use in the classroom varies depending on the course that is being taught and sometimes with the instructor who is teaching the course. The only exception made for use of a calculator in a course that does not allow one is for the Project Connection students with special accommodations.

The following gives a list of the courses offered in the department, the calculators used and if students are required to use them for the course.

What other equipment is used in the classroom?

If you are using a TI 83 or TI-84 as a requirement for a class, you will be given the appropriate calculator and a view screen so that you can demonstrate the calculator to your class.  Each classroom has an overhead projector and screen for your use. Other audio or visual equipment is available through the Audio-Visual Department.  Information about this is in the College Section of the manual.

Mathematics Computer Labs

The Mathematics Department has several of its own computer labs on campus.  The labs in JL 225 and 226 are used for classes taught using Academic Systems (some sections of Mat-010, 013 and Mat-014) Mat-123 (Statistics I) , Mat-124 (Statistics II) and Mat-285 (Business Statistics).  Courses that use these labs are usually assigned to these rooms throughout the semester.

There is also a computer lab in the Developmental Mathematics Lab/Tutoring Center Lab in MH 142 that students can use to access sites for mathematics help. (More information about the Developmental Mathematics Lab/Tutoring Center can be found in the section on tutoring).

NOTE:  The Technology Section in the College Manual will provide
you with information about using technology on campus and
where to get help, if needed.
