Adaptive Equipment (KURZWEIL 3000 & JAWS)

Middlesex County College is pleased to announce the arrival of the Kurzweil 3000 Adaptive System. The Kurzweil 3000 is an advanced reading system to assist people with learning and reading disabilities improve reading speed and comprehension. It provides both an auditory and visual presentation of scanned text and images. Kurzweil 3000 comes with JAWS for Windows software (a screen reader application) and FlexTalk (a voice synthesizer).

Kurzweil 3000 Features:

  • Scans and displays pages from any book or document
  • Speaks and highlights text: auditory and visual representation
  • Electronic talking dictionary with 175,000 word definitions
  • Synonyms
  • Speak while typing
  • Intuitive user interface
  • Highly accurate optical character recognition
  • Choice of reading personalities
  • Syllabilifacation and word spelling
  • Dual highlighting shows words in context as they are read aloud
  • Voice command recognition
  • Retains original page layouts
  • Reads and displays electronic and Internet documents
  • Magnifies spoken word


JAWS FOR WINDOWS

Access to today's popular computer applications for blind and visually impaired individuals. JAWS (Job Access With Speech) provides speech technology that works with the Windows operating system to provide access to today's popular software applications and the Internet. JAWS uses an integrated voice synthesizer and your computer sound card to output the content of your computer screen to speakers. JAWS assists visually impaired Library users to acess:

  • Library catalog
  • Journal databases
  • Internet web browsing for research

ACCESS & AVAILABILITY

Both Kurzweil 3000 and JAWS systems are located at the MCC library (Reference Room). They are available to the general public with preference given to our students/staff.

ASSISTANCE & TRAINING

Reference Librarians are available to assist students. For further information, please call the library at 906-2561 and ask for reference. Information on Kurzweil 3000 is also available from humanware.
