What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary loan services enable the library to provide materials beyond those resources available on campus. These resources include books, dissertations, government documents, periodical articles, newspaper articles, and similar materials that may be borrowed from other institutions. Consult a reference librarian if you are uncertain about the availability of an item through interlibrary loan.
Who can use MCC Interlibrary Loan services?
Interlibrary loan services are available to all Middlesex County College students, faculty, and staff. Adjunct faculty, students, and staff at off campus centers are also eligible for the services.
If you are a student, you must have a student ID validated for the current semester.
When do I need to get an item through ILL?
Before requesting an item from interlibrary loan, please consult with a reference librarian. Frequently, we own the resource that you need or similar resources. There may be other libraries close by that own the material you want. Interlibrary loan takes time and if you need to obtain the item quickly, a reference librarian can assist you in finding the resources nearby or in finding alternative resources.
Interlibrary loan requests will be accepted for items that are in MIDAS but are currently checked out or missing. We will also accept requests for periodical articles that are missing from our collection.
We will not accept interlibrary loan requests for text books used for the current curriculum.
How do I request an Interlibrary Loan?
You may request an interlibrary loan for books and articles by filling out the forms available at the Reference Desk. When requesting a book, you must supply the author, title, publisher and date of publication. For a periodical article, you must supply the journal title, article author and title, journal volume, issue number (if available), date, page numbers and the ISSN (if available). When requesting an ERIC document, please include the ED number. When requesting an item you retrieved on medline, please include the medline number.
Return the form to the reference librarian at the desk.
How long before I receive the item I requested?
Interlibrary loan is a process by which we borrow items from other libraries. If the item is available in the state, it may arrive at MCC within a week. If the item is not available in New Jersey, it may take up to three weeks before we receive the item. For effective use of interlibrary loan, do your research early enough to allow for at least two weeks to receive any items.
We will attempt to notify you of when the item is received at MCC either by email or by phone, however, it is ultimately the student's responsibility to remain informed on the status of their request. If you have not heard from the Interlibrary loan department within 7-10 days of your request, please contact the office at 732-906-2634 or by email to library_ill@middlesexcc.edu to check on its status.
How long may I keep the item?
The lending library sets the loan period for item. This time can vary between two weeks and one month. Renewal policies are also decided by the lending library. Many institutions do not extend their loan beyond the original time period. Please plan to use the item in the time allotted by the lending library.
Interlibrary loan materials are treated the same as items owned by MCC and are subject to the fines for late returns. The current rate is $ 0.50/day for overdue interlibrary loans. All borrowing privileges will be suspended if ILL fines are owed. Any items that are not returned will be reported to Student Activities and a campus wide hold will be placed on the student's account until the item is returned or otherwise resolved.
All photocopies of articles and documents are given to the student or faculty member to keep.
Does requesting an ILL cost anything?
We make every effort to provide the item to you free of charge. There are, on occasions, rare items that no free lending institution can provide. If there is a charge, the student will be notified before the item obtained and asked if they wish to cover the fee for the item. If they do, they will be asked to bring in cash or a check made out to the lending institution before they can receive the item.
How many items may I request at one time?
Because of the high demand for interlibrary loan services, we limit article and book requests for students to five articles and/or books per day. Any outstanding loaned materials must be returned before new requests can be processed.
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, U.S.C.) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or reproduction. One specified condition is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
