In Thriller, Colts Fall 72-69 in First Round

Mar 13, 2008

SUNY Cobleskill, N.Y. 72
Middlesex County College 69

Going shot for shot down the floor, the SUNY Cobleskill Tigers were able to hold on long enough to defeat second-ranked in the nation, Middlesex County College Colts, 72-69, in the fourth game of the NJCAA Men’s Division III Basketball Championship. Strong rebounding and accurate free throw shooting enabled the Tigers to hold on long enough to claim their victory.

Pulling off an early lead, Middlesex started the game off with strong rebounding and set the mood of a quick-paced game. Moving the ball up and down the floor, both teams started contending for a substantial lead. Neither was successful as this was the start of the teams contending to lead by just mere points. The Colt’s Kevin Womack dunked the ball with 48 seconds left in the first half with Cobleskill returning with one last shot to send the teams into halftime, the Tigers leading 32-30.

The second half started off the same as the first, with both teams contending for the ball and vying for some sort of lead to set them ahead. Continually playing pressured defense, the game was still tied up with only minutes left in the game. With huge offensive rebounds and shots put up by the Colts Antwan Brinson, who had the game high rebounds with 14, and Marc Tracey, who had seven rebounds for the Colts, the team was able to substantiate the foul trouble they were getting into. Cobleskill’s Harley Fuller made a two-point shot with 38.5 seconds remaining, to give the Tigers a one-point lead. Middlesex’s Manuel Perrotte was fouled with 5.9 seconds remaining and missed both of his free throws with the Colts down 71-69, and with only four seconds left, Cobleskill’s Darryl Burns, Jr. split two free throws to give the Tigers the final edge they needed to hold on an win 72-69. Leading scorers for the game were Middlesex County College’s Antwan Brinson with 24 points, followed by SUNY Cobleskill’s Stanley Francois with 15 points.

Middlesex takes on Springfield Technical Community College at 3 p.m. on Friday.
