Guidelines for Selecting the Appropriate Science Course(s)
The best way to approach an understanding of what science course(s) to take is to ask yourself about your major.
Courses for Science Transfer Students
The following courses are designed for Science Transfer Majors (Biology Transfer, Chemistry Transfer, Mathematics Transfer, and Physics Transfer) and Engineering Science. These courses have multiple high school laboratory sciences and mathematics prerequisites and in most cases are NOT appropriate for non-science majors. Please speak with an advisor in the Academic Advising Center to learn the appropriate prerequisites for these courses.
- BIO 123 and 124 (General Biology I and II)
- CHM 123 and 124 (General Chemistry I and II)
- PHY 121 and 122 (General Physics I and II)
If you are a Computer Science Transfer major, the 4-credit science sequence must end with 117 or higher.
3 Credit Science Courses
Students enrolled in A.A.S. programs in Business (except Dietetic Technology) are required to one 3 credit science course. You can choose a 4 credit science if you have the appropriate prerequisites.
Liberal Arts majors have the option of taking a 3 credit science plus a 4 credit science OR two 4 credit sciences. Liberal Arts majors should check with a Transfer Counselor before choosing a 3 credit science elective to be sure that the school to which you are transferring will accept the 3 credit science.
Fine Arts majors may choose two science and/or math classes as long as the two courses equal at least 6 credits.
The following 3 credit science courses have NO high school laboratory science or mathematics prerequisites. These courses may be used as the science prerequisite for BIO 105 and BIO 106 if you are a student without a high school laboratory science. The following is a list of all current 3 credit science courses. Please consult a Transfer Counselor to learn of their ability to transfer to another institution.

- BIO 104--Mysteries of the Microbial World
- ENV 207--Environmental Issues in Our Diverse Society
- SCI 108--Natural History of New Jersey
- SCI 206--Introduction to Forensic Science
4 Credit Science Courses
Business Administration majors are required to take one 4 credit science course. Liberal Arts majors are required to take either two 4 credit science courses OR one 3 credit science and one 4 credit science. Criminal Justice majors have the option of taking two 4 credit science courses OR two mathematics classes. Fine Arts majors may choose to mix and match two science and/or math classes as long as the two courses equal at least 6 credits.
The following 4 credit science courses have a high school laboratory science with a "C" or better or BIO 010 or CHM 010 and MAT 013 or a passing score on the College Placement Test as prerequisites:

BIO 117--Biology I (must be taken as part of a sequence for Liberal Arts majors)

CHM 117--Chemistry I (must be taken as part of a sequence for Liberal Arts majors)

CHM 118--Chemistry II (must be taken as part of a sequence for Liberal Arts majors)

The following 4 credit sciences fall into special categories:
SCI 155--Introduction to Geology
SCI 156--Introdiction to Astronomy
SCI 157--Introduction to Meterology
