In this program, students combine computer-linked commercial photography and commercial art with business and general education. The program emphasizes hands-on experience in the laboratory or studio to develop both creative ability and the mechanical skills essential to business-oriented art and photography careers. It prepares students for a career as a commercial artist or photographer in advertising agencies, company advertising departments, publishing companies, photography studios, color reproduction laboratories, printing firms, or retail establishments. The faculty who teach major courses have professional experience in the fields of commercial art and photography as well as in marketing and business.
What will I learn if I study Media Arts?
You will learn about professional practices in Graphic Design and Commercial Photography. The program emphasizes hands-on experience in a studio/computer lab setting to develop your creative abilities and the technical skills essential to successful art and photography careers. You will also learn to use industry-standard software with emphasis on the Adobe Suite.
If I major in Media Arts & Design, what degree can I earn?
The Media Arts degree is an Associate in Applied Science. This degree prepares you for a career as a commercial artist, or a photographer in advertising agencies, in-house advertising departments, publishing companies, and photography studios. In addition this degree could lead you into advertising account management, further study in marketing, and sales jobs in fields related to commercial art and design.
If I major in Media Arts & Design, can I transfer to a four-year college or university?
Many colleges and universities will apply the courses you have taken for your degree towards a bachelor’s degree. Our students have transferred to some of the best art schools in the country and to many 4-year NJ state universities.
Why major in Media Arts?
Developing technical and creative skills is important in today’s job market. This program prepares you for a professional commercial art career, but it also provides many transferable skills should you choose to move into a different field later. You learn how to develop ideas, make creative decisions, meet client expectations, and work collaboratively in groups. You also develop great presentation skills. You leave the program with a professional design resume and a professional design portfolio, ready to find work.
Are there any requirements I must satisfy before I start taking courses in my major?
If you are taking developmental classes, you may be able to only take one or two classes in your major. However, there are no portfolio or entrance pre-requisites to start the program.
How long will it take for me to complete this degree?
If you do not need developmental coursework, and you register for an average of 16 credits each semester, you can complete the degree in two years.
