On Saturday, July 11, MCC Alumni Association volunteers assisted Habitat for Humanity and PARTNER (Perth Amboy Redevelopment Team for Neighborhood Enterprise and Revitalization) with its Perth Amboy Interfaith & Community Build Project on Lawrie Street in Perth Amboy. The mission is to complete construction on a house for a low-income family to move into and call home. Families were able to submit applications to the Perth Amboy Housing Authority which then went into a lottery drawing. Once the family was chosen having met strict guidelines, they were then able to secure a mortgage on the home. Habitat families work hard for their homes as Habitat is not a give-away program. In addition to a down payment and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest up to 300 hours of labor, or “sweat equity” into building their Habitat house and other Habitat projects. Approximately 4,000 volunteers of all skill levels have been working for the past year getting the house ready for completion from start to finish.
