Exhibit Features Nationally Known Artists in Works on (and of) Paper

“Multi [Ply],” an exhibition of artwork that expresses the physical and graphic attributes of paper, is on display at the College through December 10 in the Studio Theatre Gallery. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The selected artists include David Ambrose, Nancy Cohen, Meg Hitchcock, Amy Kupferberg, Gelah Penn, Babs Reingold, Donna Ruff and Shelley Thorstensen. All of the artists have shown their work in galleries and museums nationally and internationally.

“The eight artists in this exhibition explore dualities and juxtapositions – the qualities of fragility and strength, the contrast of surface and depth, the relationship between mark and gesture, the meanings of text and image, and the elements of control and chance,” said Professor Susan Altman, the curator. “The art in Multi [Ply] share the common medium of paper and challenge our perception of what we think of as drawing, painting or printmaking. These works reflect the contemporary studio practice of developing a unique technical methodology. Despite their obvious individualities, certain similarities link the artists’ work. Mark making here is more than a descriptive means to an end. These are physical acts that transform the nature of paper beyond graphic or painterly traditions. The paper is pierced, burnt, waxed, embedded, punctured, sewn, cut or etched – all evoking a strong tactility of form.”
