R&D Council Awards Scholarships to Talented Students

Three Middlesex students were awarded $1,500 scholarships from the Research and Development Council of New Jersey.

The three are Darlene Gillet, Hisham Santiago and Gilberto Sousa.

Each year, the Council awards $1,500 scholarships to students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics-related fields who are enrolled in one of New Jersey’s community colleges. Major field of interest, grade point average, extracurricular activities, financial need, other awards, and post-graduation career goals are all considered. The R&D Council’s members make these scholarships available through donations.

This year’s contributing members are Bristol-Myers Squibb, Casabona Ventures, Celgene Corporation, ExxonMobil, General Magnaplate, Hoffman LaRoche, Novartis, PSEG, Reckitt Benckiser, Sabinsa Corporation and the Stevens Institute of Technology.

As part of their scholarships, the students attended a luncheon this summer at one of the corporate member’s research offices that will strengthen their relationship with the Council. The Council will also recognize these students’ achievements during the 2010 Thomas Alva Edison Patent Awards at the Council’s annual dinner on November 4. The scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to learn from and network with noted figures with science, technology, engineering and mathematics backgrounds.

Ten other students from New Jersey’s community colleges also received scholarships.
