Santiago Fuertes ’02, the Public Health Emergency Notification System Coordinator and Information Technology Specialist for the Atlantic County Division of Public Health, is a healthcare hero.
“His hard work and dedication have made a difference in Atlantic County’s COVID-19 response,” say his kids, Eric and Melanie Fuertes. “We couldn’t be any prouder.”
It’s no wonder that he would end up in Public Health: Santiago was awarded the Outstanding Science Student (Biology) during his time at Middlesex and received his Associate Degree with Honors in Computer Science. He has certainly made use of courses in both of those disciplines inside of Public Health.
Santiago has been working even more diligently after the shutdown, as more testing, reporting, and tracking of patients has surfaced. He’s gone from eight hours a day, Monday to Friday, to about 12 hours a day, Monday to Friday, plus weekends. He administers the paperwork for the County’s testing for COVID-19, provides logistical support in the procurement of personal protective equipment, office supplies, and personnel in support of the County’s testing efforts, gathers data and generates reports on cases, testing results and deaths. There is also a litany of conference calls, virtual meetings, status updates, and trainings that still require his attention on a daily basis. He even translated a few of the documents that are handed out to the patients who receive testing. A lifelong learner, Santiago obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Management Information Systems, again with honors, from Thomas Edison State University. Santiago is a volunteer at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission preparing meals, the Atlantic County Food Bank preparing boxes for distribution to needy individuals, a regular blood donor for the Red Cross, a Coast Guard Auxiliarist providing safe boating training, and he prepares and distributes food to needy individuals on a monthly basis for the Jewish Relief Agency – MetroWest of Morristown, NJ with his girlfriend, Kathy Loesberg.
Santiago is very proud of his Middlesex education and all the doors it opened for him!
