MCC Vet Studies Emergency Response

Michael Barany, assistant in the Middlesex County College Center for Veterans Services, was selected to present research from his doctoral program at the 2018 Homeland Defense & Security Education Summit in Albany in October.

Mr. Barany, a doctoral candidate at New Jersey City University, presented an assessment of the Township of Woodbridge’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) in furthering community resilience.

“In times of crisis, research shows that much of the American public believes that federal, state or local emergency services will be available to assist those in need,” he said. “In certain areas however, community-based volunteer organizations are the first to respond to nature-made crisis events such as flooding, tornados, and hurricanes. CERTs may be a cost-effective measure for promoting community resilience and preparedness within a town, but questions remain regarding how the community views their effectiveness.”

Mr. Barany plans to survey Woodbridge starting in late October to determine how citizens feel about the efficacy of local services.
