Well-Traveled Flag Dedicated at MCC Veterans Lounge

The flag that Michael Barany carried with him all through his Army career – including two deployments to Iraq – will now hang in the Veterans Lounge in the College Center. Michael donated the flag to the College in appreciation for all it has done for him.

When Michael graduated from Army basic training in 2006, his grandfather gave him the flag. It stayed with him during Army training, the deployments to Iraq, and during his time at Middlesex County College and then Jersey City University.

“That flag went everywhere with me,” he said. “When I was deployed, the flag served as a shield during a sandstorm, and a poncho during the rain.”

He did reconnaissance and surveillance and would be out two or three weeks at a time.

“We’d nail the flag onto the roof so helicopters flying overhead would know we were friendly,” he said.

On September 11, 2018, at the MCC program commemorating 9/11, Barany donated the flag to the College. It was installed in the Veterans Lounge and dedicated November 27.

“When I left the Army in 2011, I was lost,” he said. “If it hadn’t been for this school and its Veterans Services Center, I don’t know where I would be. I owe all my success to them.”
