Supplemental Information for Each Creative Discipline

Creative Writing Criteria

Maximum total work per school: Poetry – 15; Prose – 15.

Work can include: Critical or Personal Essay or Memoir, Drama, Fiction, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Short Story and Poetry. All copyright and plagiarism rules must be followed in the work submitted.

Poetry: Two (2) pages (max)
Prose: Four (4) pages (max), double-spaced

Formatting Requirements

  • 8 ½”x11″ white page
  • 1″ margins on all sides
  • Font: 12pt. ‘Times New Roman’ (no italic)
  • Title at the top left of the page
  • Page numbers at the bottom right
  • Every entry must include in the upper right hand corner of the page:

    • Student’s Name
    • School and Grade
  • NO written comments should appear on the work

All student work will be submitted by their teacher by February 25, 2022 to: TeenArts@middlesexcc.edu. All work submitted should be in Word or PDF format and note Poetry or Prose.


Visual Arts Criteria for 2D/3D Artwork

Maximum total work per school 2D and 3D: High School – (population under 1500) – 30 pieces; (population over 1500) – 50 pieces. Middle School – 30 pieces.

Each teacher will be able to select one work per student to display.

Each student’s work must:

  • Be two dimensional (2D) artwork (painting, drawing, collage, print, mixed media, computer generated or photograph) or three dimensional (3D) (ceramic, glass, plastic, wood, paper mâché, and mixed media)
  • Be no larger than 18”x24”. 2D with standardized labels attached to the bottom right hand corner; 3D standardized labels must be attached/or close to the 3D piece
  • Show creativity and originality, composition, content, and technical skill
  • Follow copyright and plagiarism rules

All artwork must be submitted by Monday, March 14, 2022 and will be exhibited during the Middlesex County Teen Arts Festival and Opening Reception Monday, March 14 through Wednesday, March 16, 2022. We will provide release forms to be signed for the nominated work to be transmitted to the NJ State Teen Arts Festival.

All artwork must use labels which will be provided by the TAF after your schools registration.


Dance Performance Criteria

Maximum total performances per school: Any number of performers, eight performances at four minutes each.


Instrumental Performance Criteria

Maximum total performances per school: SMALL GROUP: 1-15 performers, four performances at five minutes each. LARGE GROUP: 16+ performers, one performance at twelve minutes each OR two LARGE GROUP and no small group performances.


Musical Theatre Performance Criteria

Maximum total performances per school: SMALL GROUP: 1-15 performers, four performances at four minutes each. LARGE GROUP: 16+ performers, one performance at fifteen minutes each.


Theatre Performances

Maximum total performances per school: SMALL GROUP: 1-15 performers, four performances at four minutes each. LARGE GROUP: 16+ performers, one performance at fifteen minutes each.


Vocal Music Performance Criteria

Maximum total performances per school: SMALL GROUP: 1-15 performers, four performances at five minutes each. LARGE GROUP: 16+ performers, one performance at twelve minutes each.
